GCSE Results 2017

Fantastic results for Huish students!

Huish students celebrating again!

Huish students in Year 11 were once again celebrating today following the release of GCSE and BTEC examination results.

Despite an increase in the difficulty of the exams Huish students have once again achieved some fantastic results. At the moment the results indicate that 74% of students have achieved the basics English and Maths measure which compares very favourably with last year’s figure for the school of 75%, particularly considering that the exams have been made more challenging this year and that this figure is subject to appeals and so it likely to further increase.

Both English and Maths did exceptionally well this year with English achieving an 81.5% pass rate of Grade 4 and above and maths achieving 81.1% Grade 4 and above. It was particularly pleasing to see over 26% of students in English achieving Grade 7 or above (equivalent to A*/A grades) despite these higher grades having been made more difficult to achieve.

The Science, Humanities and Language faculties all also registered increases in their A*-C rates from last year. In addition Music, Media, Drama and Physical Education all achieved A*-C pass rates in excess on 90% with Art just behind them on 89%. BTEC Music and BTEC Physical Education also recorded 100% pass rates.

Overall over 50% of the Year 11 students achieved at least one A or A* grade and remarkably, given the increased difficulty of the exams, almost 20% of our students achieved 5 or more A and A* grades.

There were some stunning individual performances with several students, both girls and boys, achieving A*, A across the board and Grade 8 or 9 in English and Maths which places their achievement in the top 3% or so of students in the country.

Principal Andrew Davis commented, “We are absolutely delighted with this set of results, particularly given the specific difficulties and challenges with the new English and Maths GCSEs that this cohort of students and their staff have faced. Every student should be very proud of their achievements in the knowledge that they did the very best that they could. I would like to take this opportunity to thank staff and parents for all their support over the past two years of preparation for these examinations. As ever, Huish staff, both teaching and support staff, have worked tirelessly to get the very best result for each student in their care. Their professionalism is outstanding and I am lucky to have worked with such a great team. Well done once again to all the students and we wish them well for the future.”

These results come shortly after another great set of results from Huish Sixth announced last week. As in previous years a number of students achieved straight A* and A grades across all their A levels and will be going on to the very best universities in the UK including, this year, Imperial College London. Due to our continued success at A Level the Sixth Form has grown considerably over the past few years and is now almost at its maximum, however, we do have a small number of spaces remaining and so if you would like further information about the options available in Huish Sixth please do not hesitate to contact Roger Madge, Director of Post-16 studies at the Academy.
